Discovering the Postcolonial Physical theatre – Workshop
DOREA Team is inviting 4 people (residents of Cyprus) to take part in the upcoming 10-days training event that will take place on 2nd -13th November 2021 (including travel days). The training course will gather participants from Cyprus, Italy and Germany.
The training is organised as a part of the ERASMUS+ KA2 PROJECT “Reconnect” that aims to create a new approach in practices of learning and unlearning arts to intervene in hegemonic knowledge in artistic production. The participants of the project will go through a capacity building programme created by the project to train new ways of self-expression, working with theatre, role-playing and situational games, discussion events with (local) politicians, world café, decolonial cultural dance, creative writing, and more.
Workshop goals
The goal of this workshop is to raise awareness of one of the biggest human tragedies of our times, one that happens every day off the coast of Europe, whilst the general public turns a blind eye. Through this work, we intend to stress the increasing need for solidarity and social justice, critical consciousness and care. Hundreds of people every month embark on a journey across the waters that divide “Fortress Europe” from the Global South, often never reaching the coast, their lives ending silently into the Mediterranean Sea. The main topic is to focus on people who live along the coasts of the Strait of Sicily and experience the reality of the border regime and its conflicts on their skin every day.
The participants from the workshops will experiment with creative writing, theatrical games and choreographic creation on themes around these questions:
- How does artistic colonization bleeds into and layers the artistic work in complex ways? And how ethnographic research describes theatre as an encoded articulation of culture for
- the creation of a postcolonial society?
- How the notion of “choreographing history” could help us not keep on working with the modernist notions that “primitive other” fetishizing and their artistic expression?
- What do we need to do to stop pointing fingers and to start a conversation that allows us all to come together and work toward decolonizing theatre?
Workshop results
At the end of the activity, we will work with a careful reflection on water and its symbolic value for human societies. We will start and end our journey on European rivers and sea. Rome, Frankfurt, Cyprus, like most cities in Europe, is built on the banks of their waterways, the main arteries that run through the beating heart of the capitals’ city centres. Along the water, the luxury, elegance and wealth of European cities are displayed. As powerful and symbolic icons of dynamism and power, the flowing waters of European capitals will provide the framework, the starting and the ending point, of our journey.
