ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP: THE ROLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION REPORT
Active Citizenship: The role of higher education is a new report published by GuildHE and NUS (The National Union of Students). “GuildHE is an official voice for UK higher education, especially for universities and colleges with a tradition of learning, research and innovation in the industries and professions.” “The National Union of Students is a voluntary membership organisation which makes a real difference to the lives of students and its member students’ unions.”
The report will state how higher education can promote active citizenship which benefits students, institutions and societies.
- Students are empowered to contribute to their communities, get involved politically and consider a wider perspective. They gain valuable employability skills, enjoy enhanced mental health, have a better connection with communities and become agents of change.
- Institutions benefit because a culture of active citizenship contributes to the sense that an institution has a wider role to play in society whether locally, nationally or internationally.
- Society benefits from engaged and community-focused members of society who contribute to the public good.
This report sets out a Charter of six pillars of active citizenship designed for higher education institutions and students’ unions keen to take their own agenda forward. The 6 pillars are the following: Volunteering, Democratic Engagement, Environmental Sustainability, Community Engagement, Global Citizenship and Reflection and Development.
