Are today’s educators ready for the age of artificial intelligence (AI)?  It is a fair question, and one that is popping up more and more often. Because AI is not some distant future anymore, it is already here, quietly reshaping everything from how we shop to how we diagnose diseases, and, of course, how we teach. A few years back, using an AI tool to help plan a lesson would have sounded like science fiction. Now? Plenty of people do it without even thinking twice.

Education, in particular, is a space where AI feels like a real game-changer. It helps put together teaching materials, sift through mountains of data, personalise learning for each student, and give teachers back a bit of their precious time.

But of course, every new tool brings new questions. What skills do educators actually need to keep up? And how do you bring AI into the classroom in a way that actually works?

Those are the exact questions driving AI-ADU: Building Paths to the Future, an international project running under Erasmus+. The core idea is simple: help educators and administrative staff feel comfortable with AI and equipped for the digital shift that is already rolling out across the adult education sector.

The project starts with one clear conviction: AI should make life easier for educators, not harder. Therefore, every resource they develop is grounded in what teachers actually deal with day to day. A big chunk of that effort lives on the AIPaths online platform – a one-stop space packed with practical guides, course modules, webinars, and digital-skills tools. It is not about abstract theory; it’s about showing teachers how to use AI in their actual work.

 

AI Competency framework

Partnership has developed a competency framework (available in English, Greek, Lithuanian, and Italian) that helps educators and administrative staff to figure out exactly which digital skills they need, how to apply AI effectively, and how to connect with professionals across Europe to swap stories and ideas. The framework was built through research and close collaboration with educators, trainers, and administrators from four European countries. So, it genuinely reflects the real challenges people are facing.

The framework covers five core areas: technical and data literacy; pedagogical and practical applications of AI; AI for organisational processes and management; ethical questions around AI; and leadership and advocacy for digital transformation. To make it practical, it is split into three levels: Explorer, Practitioner, and Innovator – so anyone can see where they stand and what they need to work on next.

 

Transforming learning and organisations: Blended learning programme

The blended programme mixes interactive online modules with face-to-face workshops, so participants do not just absorb theory – they get to try things out straight away. 

The programme introduces practical ways to apply AI in teaching, learner communication, and institutional tasks – from lesson planning to workflow automation. It is designed to meet professionals where they are, offering pathways for exploration, upskilling and peer exchange.

 

AI as opportunity 

With webinars, workshops, open discussions, and the platform itself, there are loads of opportunities to learn from each other, share what works, and figure out together what responsible AI use in education really looks like.

Ultimately, AI-ADU is much more than a project about artificial intelligence. It is an opportunity to look at education through fresh eyes, recognising that tech can actually help educators unlock their own potential, make learning more inclusive and effective, and turn collaboration into the real driving force behind innovation.
